Research Profile

Dr. Hernandez is a veterinary epidemiologist with 30 years of experience in education, research, capacity building, and consulting in animal health and public health in U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, China, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Switzerland, and Thailand. During 1990-1996, he was an epidemiology practitioner in academia, government and industry in Mexico—with a concentration in animal disease surveillance systems of economic and public health importance. During 1996-1998, he worked for the Texas Animal Health Commission as an analytical epidemiologist. Dr. Hernandez joined the UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 1998 and was promoted to the ranks of Associate Professor in 2003 and Full Professor in 2007. In 2003, he was appointed as Director of UF CVM International Programs. In 2018, he was appointed as UF CVM Director of Graduate Education. Dr. Hernandez is certified as Master Mentor by the UF’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute. Nationally, Dr. Hernandez’s research benefits dairy, equine, small animal and marine conservation practitioners. Internationally, his expertise in diagnostics, epidemiology and disease surveillance supports government agencies involved in animal health, public health, food systems, threat reduction from biological weapons of mass destruction, and conservation efforts. Currently, his research portfolio includes: (i) clinical and population research that translates into health care and (ii) he is one of nine research team leaders of the UF’s Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems (a research and capacity-building initiative funded by USAID designed to enhance livestock systems, human health and nutrition in countries with low-income economies in Africa and Asia). He is author or co-author of 150+ research reports in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
